## The Basics of Blackjack

Blackjack is a card game in which the player and the broker must use their hole cards to form a total. If the sum of all of the cards exceeds 21, the player loses and the broker wins. Similarly, if the sum is higher than the broker’s sum or equal to the dealer’s sum, the player wins. When the sum is identical between both the broker and the participant, it is a push.

## Basic strategy

The best way to play blackjack is to use a basic strategy, which is a mathematically calculated set of decisions that will help you win more often. These strategies are designed to help you minimise the casino’s edge while maximizing the amount you win.

## Insurance bets

Insurance bets on blackjack are side bets that are placed separately from your initial bet. They pay out if the dealer has an ace in hand, and cost half of the original wager. Insurance bets are not recommended for beginners.

## Pushing

Pushing in blackjack refers to a situation where the dealer and player’s hands are tied. This can occur when the dealer has an ace and ten, or if the player has a hand valued at 21 or more. In this situation, the player does not lose money and gets his or her original bet back. It is most likely to happen when a player has a hand valued at twenty or more.

## Blackjack’s mathematical underpinnings

Blackjack’s mathematical underpinnings are not as elusive as you might think. MIT professor Edward O. Thorp first explored the implications of blackjack’s mathematical underpinnings in his 1961 book Beat the Dealer. His book focused on blackjack’s non-replacement game mechanics and the implications of probability theory in gambling games.

## Rules of the game

When you play blackjack, the goal is to get as close to 21 points as possible without exceeding it. The cards dealt to the player are valued at 10 points each, and the Ace can be worth either one or eleven points, depending on the player’s preference. If you get closer to 21 points than the dealer, you win. Otherwise, you lose and your bet remains the same.
