The Basics of Roulette
Roulette is one of the most popular casino games in both physical and online casinos. It is a simple game that is easy to learn, but has numerous betting options. There are several variations of the game, but we recommend that novices play European roulette since it has a much higher winning probability than American roulette, as well as a lower house edge.
The Roulette wheel consists of a solid, convex wooden disk slightly smaller than a baseball, with metal separators around the outside and compartments (called frets by roulette croupiers) on the inside. Thirty-six of these compartments, painted alternately red and black, are numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36. Two green compartments on the American wheel carry the numbers 0 and 00.
A player may place any number of chips on the roulette table, including a single chip on the zero. Other symmetries on the roulette table include the fact that all low red numbers and all high black numbers are together (the first dozen); the sequence 29-7-28-12-35-3-26-0-32 contains no numbers between 13 and 24 (the second twelve); and the fact that, when a ball lands on the 0 or 00, the player loses all even bets made on it.
There are countless strategies for playing roulette, some more complicated than others, and none proven to be effective. Generally, it is best to make small bets to stretch your bankroll and try out different strategies before you invest more money. It is thought to have combined elements of Roly Poly and Even Odds, games that involved betting on a spinning wheel, with Biribi, an Italian game that required players to guess which numbered ticket would be pulled out of a bag. It was not until the late 1700s, however, that it was standardized with a red and black wheel and a betting layout that has become known as today’s Roulette.
